Aanvullende informatie

Cyprus gained independence from Britain on 16 August 1960, though the path was anything but clean — the Zürich and London Agreements that preceded it imposed a constitution so structurally rigid, with fixed communal power-sharing between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, that it had collapsed into intercommunal violence within three years. By the republic's 50th anniversary, the island had been partitioned for 36 years following the 1974 Turkish military intervention, making any celebration of the unified republic's founding a politically layered act. The Central Bank issued this piece against that backdrop.
