This piece reproduces the 4 Escudos struck under Carlos II, the last Habsburg king of Spain, whose reign from 1665 to 1700 ended without an heir and triggered the War of the Spanish Succession. The original cob-style escudos of his reign were minted across multiple New World assay offices — Mexico City, Lima, Potosí — under chronic quality control problems that made irregular weight and shape the norm rather than the exception.
Carlos II suffered severe physical and cognitive disabilities throughout his life, almost certainly the result of generations of Habsburg consanguineous marriage.
