Issued ahead of the Turin Winter Olympics — the first Games held in Italy since the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics — this coin commemorates Palazzo Madama, the medieval fortress-turned-baroque palace that sits at the heart of Piazza Castello. The building served as the seat of the Italian Senate from 1848 until the capital moved to Florence in 1865, after which it passed to the city of Turin and eventually became the Museo Civico d'Arte Antica.
The Italian mint issued a full series of gold and silver pieces tying Olympic venues and Piedmontese landmarks together — a deliberate pairing of athletic spectacle with regional patrimony.
