Issued to mark the 600th anniversary of KU Leuven's founding in 1425 by Pope Martin V, making it one of the oldest continuously operating Catholic universities in the world. The institution survived suppressions under Joseph II, dissolution during the French Revolutionary period, and a forced split in 1968 along linguistic lines — the Flemish KU Leuven remaining in Leuven while the French-speaking Université catholique de Louvain relocated to the purpose-built city of Louvain-la-Neuve. That rupture is quietly acknowledged in the coin's dual naming.
