| Additional information |
Issued to mark the centenary of the Pontifical Lateran University, which was formally reconstituted by Pius XI in 1923 following the reorganization of pontifical studies in Rome. The university traces its origins considerably further back — to the Athenaeum of the Lateran established in 1773 — but the 1923 charter gave it its current institutional form and direct papal governance.
Copper-nickel circulation-quality commemoratives from the Vatican remain technically legal tender but are produced in limited quantities sold directly through Vatican philatelic and numismatic offices, never entering general circulation.
