Langon is a small commune in the Gironde, better known for its position at the southern gateway to the Sauternes wine region than for any monetary history. This piece belongs to the wave of French municipal "euro" issues produced in 1996–97, ahead of the single currency's actual introduction, when dozens of towns minted locally denominated silver pieces under a scheme loosely coordinated by the Monnaie de Paris. The bracketed 33 in the issue name references the INSEE department number for Gironde.
