| 裏面の説明 | Central device features twelve interlocking hands arranged in a circular pattern, symbolising unity, with a bird carrying an olive branch or leaf depicted in the upper centre above the numeral '20' in the field. Two arcs of six five-pointed stars each border the design along the right side of the inner rim. A multilingual trial inscription reading 'TRIAL • ESSAI • PRUEBA • MUSTER' curves around the upper or outer border in raised Latin capitals, identifying the piece as a pattern or essai strike. |

Latvia joined the European Union in May 2004 but did not adopt the euro until 2014, a full decade later. In the interim, the European Central Bank authorized the production of trial pieces — known variously as probes, essais, or pruebas depending on the market — to test planchet specifications and vending machine compatibility before any official currency decision had been finalized. These pieces were never legal tender and were not distributed through normal channels.
The 2004 Latvian euro trial series remains a niche collecting area, with most examples traceable to limited institutional distributions rather than open-market sales.
