Philippe ascended to the Belgian throne in July 2013 following the abdication of his father Albert II, making this the first Belgian euro coinage to carry his effigy. Belgium's euro cent series has rotated royal portraits with each reign, a practice that has produced four distinct obverse types since 2002 — far more turnover than most eurozone states have seen in the same period.
