Additional information

John Paul II's Vatican euro coinage debuted in 2002 alongside the broader eurozone rollout, but Vatican issues were never intended for general circulation — they were produced exclusively as collector sets, meaning essentially no examples ever passed through a cash register. The annual mintage figures were tightly capped by agreement with the European Union, which grants Vatican City the right to issue euro-denominated coinage despite not being an EU member state.

John Paul II died in April 2005, making this the final year of the type. His successor Benedict XVI required an entirely new obverse series beginning in 2006.
