Obverse description Left-facing effigy of King Albert II of Belgium, depicted in a restrained, contemporary portrait style engraved by Jan Alfons Keustermans. The king is shown wearing eyeglasses, with his hair swept back in fine relief. To the right of the portrait, a crowned royal monogram comprising the letter 'A' surmounted by a royal crown identifies the monarch. Twelve five-pointed stars, representing the European Union, are arranged around the inner beaded border, with the date appearing at the bottom of the field.
