Popis líce	The obverse features the Brian Boru harp, the traditional national symbol of Ireland, rendered in fine relief at centre. The Irish-language inscription 'ÉIRE', denoting Ireland, appears to the left of the harp, while the year of issue is inscribed to the right. The design is framed by the twelve five-pointed stars of the European Union arranged along the outer border, symbolising European unity. The composition was designed by engraver Jarlath Hayes.

Popis rubu	The reverse displays the common European Union design for the 20 euro cent denomination, as conceived by engraver Luc Luycx. A stylised relief map of the European continent, depicted without internal national borders and extending into the field, occupies the left and central portions of the design. The numeral '20' appears in large format to the right, with the inscription 'EURO CENT' completing the denomination below. The designer's initials 'LL' appear adjacent to the denomination numeral.
