Obverse description The obverse features the Brian Boru harp, the traditional national symbol of Ireland, rendered in fine relief at centre. The Irish-language inscription 'ÉIRE', denoting Ireland, appears to the left of the harp, while the year of issue is inscribed to the right. The design is framed by the twelve five-pointed stars of the European Union arranged along the outer border, symbolising European unity. The composition was designed by engraver Jarlath Hayes.
