| 正面描述 | The obverse displays the large coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia prominently in the central field, rendered in detailed relief. Below the arms, the date of issue and the country name appear as the legend LATVIJA. The outer ring, separated from the inner design by a raised border, bears the twelve stars of the European Union arranged in a full circle, a standard motif on Latvian euro coinage. The design was executed by engraver Jānis Strupulis. |

Latvia joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2014, making this the first year of issue for Latvian euro coinage. The accession came after a decade-long qualification process that included a severe 2008–2009 economic contraction — one of the worst in the EU — during which Latvia rejected IMF pressure to devalue the lats and instead pursued brutal austerity to maintain its euro peg. That decision made eventual membership both politically charged and, for many Latvians, hard-won.
