Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Pope John XXIII wearing the papal zucchetto and embroidered vestments, rendered in fine relief. The legend IOANNES XXIII PONT. MAX curves along the upper periphery of the coin in capital Latin letters. The effigy occupies the central field, with the truncation of the bust visible at the lower portion of the design.

Reverse description The large numeral '20' dominates the right portion of the field, with the word CENT inscribed below it. To the left, a detailed depiction of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City is shown in perspective view, with stylised rays emanating upward from behind the dome. The word PROVA (meaning 'trial' or 'proof') appears beneath the basilica, followed by the date 2005. Twelve five-pointed stars of the European Union encircle the entire design along the rim.
