| 正面描述 | Central field features a stylized design inspired by M.C. Escher's graphic art, depicting two interlocking birds in tessellation — one rendered in outline facing left, the other facing right — with a circle of twelve stars to the left referencing European imagery. The denomination '20' appears centrally within the bird motif, with 'EURO' inscribed in a stylized geometric typeface below. The date '1998' is shown at the base flanked by mint marks, while the Dutch royal arms appear in a cartouche at the upper right. The circular legend 'KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN' runs along the outer rim. |

This piece was issued to mark the centenary of Escher's birth — he was born in Leeuwarden on June 17, 1898. The Dutch mint had a history of producing artist commemoratives in silver, but Escher presented an unusual problem: his work is so compositionally dense that any adaptation to a coin format risks either oversimplifying the imagery or producing a die too intricate to strike cleanly at volume. The .800 fineness rather than the more common .925 reflects the standard Dutch commemorative silver specification of the period.
