Reverse description The central motif is the Portuguese armillary sphere rendered in fine detail, with the national shield — comprising five escutcheons each charged with five bezants — superimposed at its centre. The armillary sphere's rings, meridians, and ecliptic bands are crisply struck and encircle the shield in a bold, stylised manner. The legend 'REPÚBLICA·PORTUGUESA' curves along the upper periphery in evenly spaced raised letters separated by a central dot, while the date '1971' is positioned in the lower arc flanked by two small floral ornaments. The whole composition is enclosed within a beaded border consistent with that of the obverse.
