Reverse description The Portuguese national coat of arms, comprising the royal quinas shield set within a red bordure charged with castles, is superimposed at centre upon an armillary sphere whose meridian bands form the arms of the Order of Christ cross. The entire device is rendered in high relief against a polished field. The circular legend REPÚBLICA · PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1960 in the lower field flanked by two small quatrefoil ornaments. The word PROVA is incuse-stamped in the right field, identifying this piece as an official proof pattern.
