| 备注 |
Portugal's 20 Escudo denomination had a remarkably long run through multiple printings, and by the eighth the plates were showing the wear of repetition — Thomas De La Rue had been producing this series for Banco de Portugal across nearly two decades of successive issues. The escudo was under no particular monetary stress in 1971, but the Estado Novo regime's colonial wars in Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau were draining the treasury, and maintaining currency confidence at home required steady, uninterrupted supply of well-printed notes.
Pick 173 collectors should note that distinguishing between printings typically requires close attention to the series letter prefixes on the serial numbering.
