The Banco Nacional Ultramarino was Portugal's designated overseas bank, issuing currency across its colonial territories rather than in metropolitan Portugal itself. This 1921 note is a Mozambique issue — BNU operated separate series for different territories, and the P#59 designation places this firmly within the Mozambican sequence rather than the Angola or Timor lines, which ran concurrently under the same institutional umbrella but with distinct plates.
