| توضیحات پشت سکه | The royal arms of Greece displayed at centre: a shield bearing a plain Greek cross on a horizontally lined field, draped within an ermine-lined royal mantle surmounted by a jewelled crown. The mantle is tied at the base with a tassel and terminates in a pendant order badge. A scrolled cartouche below the shield carries the royal motto ΙΣΧΥΣ ΜΟΥ Η ΑΓΑΠΗ ΤΟΥ ΛΑΟΥ. The circular legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ arcs around the upper field, while the denomination 20 ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ is inscribed in large characters along the lower arc, all within a beaded border. |

Greece's gold coinage in this period was struck in conformity with the Latin Monetary Union, to which Greece had been admitted in 1868. The 20 Drachmai shared its specifications with the French 20 Francs, the Italian 20 Lire, and the Swiss 20 Francs — interchangeable by design across member states. The 1884 issue was struck at Athens.
The "3rd portrait" designation distinguishes this from the earlier effigy types used on the same denomination during George I's long reign, which ran from 1863 to 1913.
