Liberia's numismatic output around the turn of the millennium was dominated by a cottage industry of commemorative issues aimed squarely at the American collector market — the USS Constitution series among them. The ship itself earned its "Old Ironsides" nickname during the War of 1812, when British shot reportedly bounced off its oak hull during engagement with HMS Guerriere in August 1812.
Liberia had no political or historical connection to the vessel. These were revenue-generating issues, produced under contract by private minting firms and licensed through the Liberian government.
