Liberia's late-1990s and early-2000s commemorative program was essentially a licensing operation, producing silver rounds marketed to American collectors with little connection to Liberian monetary history. Jackson was chosen for the same reason dozens of Confederate and Union figures appeared in the series: the American Civil War sold.

Jackson died in May 1863 from pneumonia following a friendly-fire incident at Chancellorsville — shot by his own troops in the dark.
