The 0 Series Shinkansen, which entered service on the Tōkaidō line in October 1964 in time for the Tokyo Olympics, ran for 44 years before the last revenue service was completed in December 2008. Liberia's early 2000s commemorative program was notably prolific — the Central Bank issued dozens of silver pieces honoring foreign transportation, wildlife, and historical subjects with no domestic connection whatsoever, targeting the collector market almost exclusively.
The coins were never intended for circulation in Liberia.
