Additional information

Phoebe Yates Pember served as chief matron of Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond — at its peak the largest military hospital in the world, treating some 76,000 Confederate soldiers across the war. Her 1879 memoir, A Southern Woman's Story, remains one of the sharpest firsthand accounts of Civil War medical conditions ever written. Liberia's long-running series of American commemoratives aimed squarely at the U.S. collector market produced dozens of such issues around the turn of the millennium, this being among the less frequently encountered subjects in that run.
