Obverse description The national coat of arms of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a sailing ship on the sea, a palm tree, a dove in flight, and a rising sun, all within a shield surmounted by a scroll. A ribbon below bears the legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. The date 2004 is divided across the lower field, flanking the shield. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper rim, while a secondary scroll legend THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE encircles the inner edge of the coin.

Reverse description A facing three-quarter portrait bust of the Danish physicist Niels Henrik David Bohr dominates the central field, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished background. Behind the effigy, to the left, rises a detailed depiction of a historic European building, identifiable as Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. The legend NIELS HENDRICK DAVID BOHR arcs along the upper rim, and the denomination 20 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower exergue.
