背面描述 The reverse depicts a detailed scene of the Apollo XVI lunar landing, with the Lunar Module Orion prominently rendered in the central field, its descent stage resting on the lunar surface amid scattered rocks. To the left, the planted United States flag stands unfurled, bearing the inscription UNITED STATES on its pole base. To the right, a fully suited astronaut is shown walking on the lunar surface. The circular legend, reading YOUNG * MATTINGLY * DUKE - MISSION APOLLO XVI, arcs around the upper periphery, naming the three crew members of the mission. The denomination $20 appears in the lower field beneath the central scene.

附加信息

Apollo 16 landed in the Descartes Highlands in April 1972 — the only lunar mission to target the highlands specifically, based on the (ultimately incorrect) hypothesis that the region would yield volcanic rock samples. John Young and Charles Duke instead found impact breccias, overturning prevailing theories about lunar geology. The mission returned 95.8 kg of samples, the second-largest haul of any Apollo flight.

Liberia issued numerous commemorative silver pieces around 2000 under licensing arrangements that had little connection to the events depicted.
