The eagle clutches three arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right, symbolizing war and peace. Above the eagle's head, a glory of thirteen five-pointed stars radiates through clouds, with the legend TWENTY D. at the bottom and E PLURIBUS UNUM on a ribbon in the eagle's beak. The peripheral legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the design. Notably, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is absent from this type, distinguishing it from later issues. |
