| 裏面の説明 | The reverse presents a finely detailed portrait bust of James K. Polk, the eleventh President of the United States, facing slightly to the right, rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The arc legend XI U.S. PRESIDENT • JAMES K. POLK runs along the upper periphery. The dates 1845 and 1849, denoting his presidential term, are placed in the lower left and lower right fields respectively. The denomination $20 appears in a recessed cartouche at the bottom of the coin. |

Liberia's late-1990s and early-2000s commemorative program was among the most prolific — and commercially cynical — in modern numismatic history, producing hundreds of licensed issues aimed squarely at the American collector market rather than domestic circulation. This Polk piece is a product of that pipeline, struck almost certainly by a European contract mint and never intended to see a single Liberian hand.
Polk himself remains historically underrated: he annexed Texas, prosecuted the Mexican-American War to its conclusion, acquired the Oregon Territory, and declined a second term — all within four years.
