Additional information

Liberia produced an enormous volume of commemorative silver issues around the turn of the millennium, many contracted through the Pobjoy Mint and similar private facilities, targeting the collector market rather than any domestic monetary function. The Buchanan piece belongs to a long presidential series that flooded dealer inventories throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, driving secondary market values well below issue price almost immediately.

Buchanan remains the only U.S. president never to have married, and left office in March 1861 having done little to prevent the secession crisis that handed Lincoln a country already fracturing.
