| Obverse description | The full coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia is centrally displayed, featuring a shield bearing a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun, with a plow and a spade in the lower portion. A ribbon scroll encircling the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, and is repeated on a banner below the shield. The date is divided on either side of the arms, with 20 to the left and 01 to the right. |

| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a draped bust of Saint Francis of Assisi in the lower central field, shown nimbed with a halo, holding a sprig of foliage, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. Behind him, two celebrated Italian architectural landmarks are depicted in detailed relief: the façade of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City to the left, and the Gothic façade of the Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence to the right. The country name ITALIA is inscribed in the upper field, and the denomination 20 DOLLARS appears along the lower rim. |

| Additional information |
Liberia issued a substantial series of foreign-themed commemoratives in the late 1990s and early 2000s, most produced by European minting houses and sold directly into the collector market rather than circulated. These pieces were legal tender in name only — Liberia's actual circulating currency was the Liberian dollar, and no meaningful quantity of these coins ever reached Monrovia.
The "Italy" issue belongs to a run of country-themed 20-dollar pieces that functioned as a licensing and revenue exercise, exploiting Liberia's sovereign minting authority.
