William R. Tolbert Jr. was inaugurated as President of Liberia on January 3, 1972, following the death of William Tubman, who had held the presidency for 27 years. Tolbert's administration initially pursued reform and a degree of political openness — a sharp departure from Tubman's tight patronage system. The commemorative gold issue marked that transition with some optimism. It proved misplaced: Tolbert was assassinated in a military coup led by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe on April 12, 1980.
The .900 fine specification aligns this piece with the long-established U.S. gold coin standard, a deliberate choice for a nation founded under American patronage.
