Additional information

The Hawker Hurricane is often overshadowed by the Spitfire in popular memory, yet RAF Fighter Command credited it with destroying more enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain than all other defences combined. Canadian pilots flew Hurricanes extensively — No. 1 Squadron RCAF, the first Canadian unit to see combat in the Second World War, operated them during the battle in the autumn of 1940. The Royal Canadian Mint's numismatic program has returned to RCAF aviation subjects repeatedly, and this issue falls within a broader series commemorating aircraft flown by Canadians in wartime service.
