The Brunei Currency Board was established under the Currency Agreement of 1967, which also formalized the interchangeability of the Brunei dollar with the Singapore dollar — a arrangement still legally in force today. This 1987 issue falls within the early reign of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who assumed the sultanate in 1967 and led Brunei to full independence from Britain in January 1984, just three years before this coin was struck.
KM#32 is part of a modest commemorative program issued through the 1980s, largely for export and collector markets rather than domestic circulation.
