| Beschrijving voorzijde | A multicolor effigy of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah occupies the right portion of the rectangular field, depicted in three-quarter bust facing left, dressed in traditional golden regalia with military decorations and a ceremonial songkok headdress. To the left, the multicolor APEC 2000 logo is prominently displayed alongside a stylized flower motif in green and yellow. The year '2000' and the inscription 'BRUNEI DARUSSALAM' appear beneath the APEC acronym in the left field. An Arabic calligraphic signature of the Sultan with the word 'SULTAN' beneath is positioned centrally. The upper border bears the legend 'SULTAN HAJI HASSANAL BOLKIAH' in Latin script, while the lower border features an ornate traditional Bruneian scroll relief pattern. |

Brunei hosted the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November 2000 — the first time the sultanate had done so — bringing together heads of state including Clinton, Putin, and Jiang Zemin for talks that were overshadowed almost entirely by the ongoing fallout from the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis and its aftermath across the region.
The Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam issued commemoratives for the occasion in limited quantities, as is consistent with their practice for high-profile state events. These pieces saw virtually no circulation.
