Hassanal Bolkiah assumed the sultanate in 1967 following his father's abdication, and by 2006 had accumulated roughly four decades of absolute rule over one of Southeast Asia's wealthiest states per capita — wealth derived almost entirely from oil concessions negotiated under British protection before independence in 1984. Brunei's commemorative coinage program has long served the palace rather than commerce; these pieces are struck in small quantities, distributed through official channels, and rarely enter secondary markets from within the country itself.
