Trial pieces for Ethiopia's 1966 Golden Jubilee commemorative series were produced ahead of the official gold strikes to test die alignment, planchet sizing, and relief depth before committing to precious metal. This reverse trial — struck in gold-plated bronze rather than the issued .900 fine gold — would have circulated within the mint approval process only, never intended for release.
The jubilee itself marked forty years of Haile Selassie's reign dating from his 1930 coronation, though he had effectively governed as regent since 1916.
