Liberia's commemorative program in the early 2000s was among the most prolific — and commercially cynical — in the modern numismatic market, producing dozens of themed issues annually for direct sale to collectors with no pretense of domestic circulation. This piece honoring Gustave Eiffel was struck the year after the tower's 115th anniversary, timed to no particular occasion.
Eiffel himself never considered the tower his defining work — he regarded his iron bridge and viaduct engineering as the more serious contribution to structural science.
