Obverse description The shield-shaped coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a three-masted sailing ship on open waters with a palm tree and rising sun on the shore, flanked by a dove in flight above. A scroll bearing the national motto 'THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE' arches across the upper portion of the arms. The date '2001' is divided by the shield, with '20' to the left and '01' to the right. The outer legend 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' curves along the upper rim, with a second inscription 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' on a banner at the base of the design, all within a beaded border.

Additional information

Liberia's early 2000s commemorative program was frankly opportunistic — the government licensed its minting authority to produce coins with essentially no domestic relevance, targeting collector markets in Europe and North America. This piece, invoking Greek antiquity for a West African sovereign issuer, is a product of that arrangement rather than any monetary or historical necessity.
