Kiribati's commemorative program in the early 1990s leaned heavily on space themes despite having no connection to space exploration — the islands sit almost precisely on the equator and the International Date Line, which is about as close as the nation gets to the cosmos. This piece marks the 30th anniversary of Alexei Leonov's March 1965 EVA aboard Voskhod 2, an 12-minute excursion that nearly ended in disaster when his suit inflated so rigidly in vacuum that he could not re-enter the airlock and had to bleed off pressure manually to squeeze back inside.
