| Obverse description | The obverse features the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susan Taylor, rendered in fine relief against a mirror-polished field. The legend CANADA 2020 arcs across the upper portion of the fan-shaped flan, with ELIZABETH II immediately below. The inscription D·G·REGINA appears beneath the portrait, flanked by the denomination 20 DOLLARS at the base. The design is contained within the distinctive puzzle-piece shaped planchet characteristic of the Four Winds series. |

Martin Frobisher's three voyages to the Canadian Arctic between 1576 and 1578 were financed largely on the promise of black ore his crews brought back from Baffin Island — ore that Elizabethan assayers declared rich in gold. It was not. Roughly 1,200 tonnes of worthless iron pyrite and hornblende were shipped to England before the scheme collapsed, leaving investors ruined and the Cathay Company dissolved.
The Four Winds series pairs historical navigators with the compass directions their routes defined. Frobisher's association with the northwest passage attempt makes him the natural anchor for this issue.
