| Reverse description | The reverse displays a selectively gold-plated oval medallion with a beaded border, set against a coloured cartographic background of rhumb lines, containing a three-quarter facing portrait bust of the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, depicted with long curled hair and period dress. The oval portrait is supported by an ornate silver scrollwork cartouche bearing the legend DE LA SALLE in bold capitals. Engraved maple leaf sprigs and branches in high relief fill the remaining field of the puzzle-piece shaped flan, lending a distinctly Canadian decorative character to the composition. |
