The "Benevolent Bison" belongs to a Royal Canadian Mint series using ultra-high relief and selective minting techniques developed in the mid-2010s to compete with collector issues from Perth and the U.S. Mint. Plains bison were functionally extinct in Canada by the 1880s, reduced from an estimated 30 million animals to a few hundred through commercial hunting and deliberate extermination campaigns tied to colonial policy. The Wood Buffalo National Park herd — established partly from privately saved Montana stock — remains the primary reason the species survives at all in Canada.
