Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's long-running crystal insertion series, which began attracting serious collector attention in the mid-2000s as the technology for setting Swarovski elements into struck planchets matured. The snowflake issues in particular became among the most subscribed in the program's history, routinely selling out at issue price before delivery.
Tanzanite — the blue-violet zoisite variety first described scientifically in 1967 — is sourced almost exclusively from a single mining zone near Merelani in northern Tanzania, making its inclusion here more than decorative choice.
