The Antikythera mechanism was recovered in 1901 from a Roman-era shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, likely sunk between 70 and 60 BC. For decades it was assumed to be an astrolabe; it wasn't until 1959 that Derek de Solla Price formally identified it as a geared astronomical calculator — the oldest known device of its kind by over a millennium. Subsequent X-ray and CT imaging revealed at least 30 interlocking bronze gears capable of predicting solar and lunar cycles, eclipses, and the four-year Olympiad cycle.
Cook Islands has issued this piece as part of a broader program of high-relief, large-format collector issues on scientific and historical themes. Being posthumous, the obverse carries the Jody Clark effigy of Elizabeth II, who died September 8, 2022.
