Part of the RCM's long-running fine silver collector series celebrating Canadian winter pastimes, this issue belongs to a period when the mint was aggressively expanding its thematic collector program — releasing dozens of $20 silver pieces annually to the point where secondary market premiums collapsed on many issues within the series. Pond hockey, as distinct from organized rink hockey, carries genuine cultural weight in Canada: the outdoor pickup game predates the NHL by decades and is the form in which most rural Canadians historically encountered the sport.
Mintage was capped at 10,000 pieces, a figure typical of the higher-end issues in this run.
