Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing fine silver wildlife series, this issue appeared during a period when the RCM was aggressively expanding its collector bullion program — releasing dozens of themed $20 face-value pieces annually at prices well above melt. The northern pike was one of several freshwater species featured across consecutive years, a deliberate appeal to the Canadian sportfishing market.
The .9999 fineness, rather than the more common .999, was a consistent marketing differentiator the RCM leaned on heavily during this era to justify collector premiums over comparable issues from other sovereign mints.
