The Avro Lancaster entered service with RAF Bomber Command in 1942 and became the primary heavy bomber of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, a program largely administered from Canadian soil. More Canadians flew Lancasters than any other aircraft type during the Second World War, which explains the Royal Canadian Mint's decision to anchor this series around it. The coin is the fourth in the RCM's Aircraft series, which ran from 1990 to 1996 and covered defining Canadian aviation milestones.

Production of the Lancaster at Victory Aircraft Ltd. in Malton, Ontario — the only Canadian manufacturer — totalled 430 airframes before the war's end.
