Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics commemorative program, this issue was released in 1987 as part of a multi-year series that ran from 1985 through 1988, ultimately comprising ten coins across four release years. Canada had hosted the Winter Games once before, at Squaw Valley — no, that was American — at the 1976 Innsbruck Games it did not host at all; Calgary was only Canada's second Winter Olympics bid to succeed, following the 1988 award by the IOC in 1981.
