Franklin's 1845 Arctic expedition — 129 men, two ships, none returning — became the most-searched-for disaster in polar history, with over thirty rescue missions launched between 1848 and 1859. The wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were not located until 2014 and 2016 respectively, making this coin's 2015 issue date a direct response to the Erebus discovery the previous September. Parks Canada found her in just 11 metres of water off King William Island, broadly consistent with Inuit oral accounts that had been largely dismissed by Victorian-era searchers for over a century.
