Cook Islands has issued commemorative gold under licensing arrangements with foreign themes since the 1990s, and Japanese cultural subjects have been a recurring commercial target for that market. Dazaifu Tenman-gū in Fukuoka Prefecture is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the ninth-century scholar and poet exiled there in 901 AD, who allegedly died longing for the plum trees he'd left behind in Kyoto.
